How to Choose a Backpack for Outdoor Mountaineering
An outdoor hiking backpack serves as a mobile campsite in the wilderness. Choosing the wrong one can directly endanger safety and physical condition. By following the four-step selection process of "capacity determined by the itinerary, weight distribution based on body size, functions determined by terrain, and quality determined by details", one can quickly find a reliable companion.
I. Capacity for the itinerary
For a one-day round trip, choose a capacity of 20-30L, which can hold water, food, and emergency clothing; for a 2-3 day trip, select a capacity of 40-50L, which can accommodate a sleeping bag and tent; for a trip of 5 days or above, or in high-altitude areas during winter, choose a capacity of 65-80L, leaving space for down jackets and stoves. Choosing a larger capacity is better than a smaller one as it will reduce unnecessary weight. Precise calculation is more scientific.
II. Backpack sizing based on body type
Measure the distance from the seventh cervical vertebra to the iliac crest, and correspond to the S/M/L backboards; the waist belt should wrap around the upper edge of the iliac bone and bear more than 50% of the weight. When trying on the backpack in the store, load 10kg and walk for 10 minutes. If there are no marks on the shoulder straps and the waist is not sagging, it is qualified.
III. Function based on terrain
Rock routes require wear-resistant 500D nylon and ice axe rings; for rainforest rappelling, choose zippered sealing and quick-drying fabrics; for mountain climbing, heavy top packs can be detachable and have a fixed point for snow poles. Excessive redundancy of functions will increase weight. Precise matching is more efficient.
IV. Quality based on details
The zipper is preferably YKK 8 sizes or above, and the fasteners are selected as Duraflex; the elastic net on the side pockets can be used to take water with one hand, and the chest strap integrates a survival whistle. The fabric is 210D-500D nylon, balancing lightness and tear resistance; the frame is made of aluminum alloy or carbon fiber, which will not break at -20℃.
From the capacity figures to the back-packing fit, from the feature list to the zipper brand, the selection of a hiking backpack is a balance between rationality and experience. The sole criterion is this: when you carry it and stand at the starting point of the mountain trail, your body will forget about it, and your mind can fully focus on the distant scenery and the safety beneath your feet.
