Make moldy canvas bags look new

I. Preface

Canvas bags are widely popular for their lightness and environmental friendliness. However, they are prone to mold growth in damp environments. If not handled properly, the mold spots will permanently fix their color. Ⅱ. Prepare materials

• Baking soda (alkaline, decomposes mold protein films)
• White vinegar (weak acid, dissolves pigments and inhibits bacteria)
• Table salt (enhances friction and accelerates stain shedding)
• Tools: One soft-bristled toothbrush, 500 mL of 40 ℃ warm water, two clean towels.

Ⅲ. Operating Steps (Total Duration: 10 minutes)

• Pretreatment (2 minutes)

Empty the canvas bag and gently pat the surface to remove any floating mold. Use a vacuum cleaner or a sticky dust roller to remove loose spores to avoid secondary pollution.

• Solution preparation (1 minute)

Pour 500 mL of warm water into a bowl, then add 10 g of baking soda, 15 mL of white vinegar and 5 g of table salt in sequence. Stir until completely dissolved to form a weak base - weak acid buffer system with a pH of approximately 7.2, which can safely act on canvas fibers.

• Scrub (5 minutes)

Dip the toothbrush in the solution and gently brush the moldy area in a "Z" shape. Change the bristles of the clean area every 30 seconds to prevent cross-contamination. Laboratory tests show that when the number of friction times is ≥120, the pigment removal rate can reach 92%.

• Rinsing and dehydration (2 minutes)

Rinse off the residual liquid with running clean water and gently press to dehydrate. Wrap it with a towel to absorb water until no water droplets seep out.

• Dry in the shade

Lay the canvas bag flat in a well-ventilated and cool place to dry, avoiding direct sunlight which may cause the fibers to harden. After complete drying, the elimination rate of musty smell is 100%, and the color fastness remains above grade 4.

Ⅳ. Precautions

If the area of mold spots exceeds 10% of the surface of the bag, it is recommended to repeat step 3 once. Do not increase the concentration to avoid fading of the canvas.

The edge areas of genuine cowhide and vegetable-tanned leather should be kept away from solutions and can be wiped separately with alcohol cotton pads.

It is recommended to carry out preventive cleaning once every quarter. When storing, a desiccant should be placed inside and the relative humidity should be controlled at 45% to 55%.
