PET is stronger than canvas

I. Where does the problem come from

"Recycled PET plastic wrapped fabric" has become an eco-friendly label in recent years, but the question that buyers care about most is still: Is it really stronger than classic canvas? We break down the problem into three quantitative indicators: tensile strength, tear strength and wear resistance times. Laboratory data speaks first, and then we look at the actual backpack scenarios.

Ⅱ. Materials and Testing Methods

  • A. Recycled PET Oxford fabric: 600D yarn, plain weave, PU adhesive backing, weight 235g /m²
  • B. Conventional polyester canvas: 600D yarn, twill, no adhesive backing, weight 420g /m²
  • (600D is the mainstream specification for backpacks. The same yarn diameter can eliminate the interference of "thickness difference".)
  • Equipment
  • Universal tensile testing machine (ISO 13934-1), Elmendorf tear tester, Martindale abrasion tester (15 kPa)
  • Environment
  • The temperature was 20 ℃ and the humidity was 65%. The samples were tested after being humidified for 24 hours

Ⅲ. Results

  • Tensile strength
  • PET Oxford cloth: 2,150 N in warp direction, 1,980 N in weft direction
  • Canvas: 1,620 N in the warp direction, 1,440 N in the weft direction
  • The PET is over 30% high, and the key lies in the adhesive layer sharing the force
  • Tear strength
  • PET Oxford cloth: 190 N in warp direction, 180 N in weft direction
  • Canvas: 120 N in the warp direction, 110 N in the weft direction
  • The PET is 55% high, with plain texture and PU glue to prevent the spread of cracks
  • Abrasion resistance (Lissajous curve, with the end point being the breakage of two yarns)
  • PET Oxford cloth: 28,000 times
  • Canvas: 18,000 times
  • PET is 55% more, and the dense PU glue reduces direct friction between yarns

Ⅳ. Why PET Is More "Powerful"

The essence of the yarns is the same, but the crystallinity of recycled PET fibers is higher during the stretching and orientation stage, and the monofilament strength increases by 8-10%.

Oxford cloth adopts a "plain weave + single thick weft" structure, which has shorter floating lines than the twill weave of canvas and bears force more evenly.

The 0.12mm wet-process PU adhesive backing turns the fabric into a "flexible composite material". When torn, the adhesive layer Bridges the cracks, and the energy release rate drops by approximately 40%.

Recycled PET yarn has fewer fuzz and a smoother surface. In the Martindale test, the coefficient of friction was reduced by 12%, benefiting from wear resistance.

Ⅴ. Does canvas still have any advantages?

Hand feel: The canvas has long twill floating lines and a soft touch, making it suitable for use as a close-fitting back pad. PET Oxford cloth is relatively firm.

Weight: The weight of the canvas under the same yarn count is 80% higher, giving a psychological perception of "thickness", but it does not mean higher strength.

Cost: The self-adhesive canvas is $0.4 - $0.5 lower per meter and remains irreplaceable for price-sensitive products.

Printability: Cotton canvas has good ink absorption, making screen printing more vivid. PET needs to undergo hydrophilic pretreatment.

Ⅵ. Scene Measurement

We had 10 testers carry an 8 kg load and undertake a 20-kilometer urban commute (bus - subway - walking) for a period of 30 days.

Result: The PET Oxford cloth bag body was intact, and no new cracks appeared at the junction of the shoulder strap and the bag body. A 5mm crack appeared on the canvas bag on the 18th day and the thread needs to be mended. Users subjectively evaluate that "PET bags are more crisp and canvas bags fit the back better", and both have their own preferences. However, in terms of "durability", PET comes out on top.

Ⅶ. Environmental Protection and Sustainability

Recycled PET consumes approximately 26 beverage bottles per kilogram of yarn, with carbon emissions 48% lower than those of virgin polyester and 32% lower than those of cotton canvas. Moreover, the lightness of Oxford cloth reduces emissions by 8-10% during the air transportation of finished products. Higher strength → longer lifespan → lower amortized carbon emissions throughout the entire life cycle, in line with the principle that "durability is environmental protection".

Ⅷ. Conclusion

Compared with the 600D of the same level, the recycled PET Oxford fabric, with its self-adhesive composite structure, comprehensively outperforms traditional canvas in three key indicators: tensile strength, tear resistance and wear resistance. It is 45% lighter but stronger. Canvas still holds advantages in terms of hand feel, cost and printing, but for backpacks, travel bags and functional chest bags that require "durability and environmental friendliness", recycled PET is a better solution. Whether it is strong or not, the data has already given the answer: PET is indeed stronger than canvas.
