Weight of outdoor bag

Nov 12, 2025

For hikers, every gram reduction in the backpack means three kilograms less impact on the knees. With the material revolution, the empty weight of outdoor bags has entered the "hundred-gram era". A systematic review shows that the lightest complete package currently available on the market can be less than 50 grams, and the critical point between "usable" and "good to use" lies between 90 and 120 grams.

I. Lower limit Determined by Materials

The main body is changed to 7D silicon-coated nylon, with a tear strength still reaching 2kg and a weight of only 18g/m². The back net adopts laser-hollowed-out grid, reducing weight by 40% per square meter. The frame was completely removed and replaced by two 2mm carbon fiber rods, weighing only 8g.

Ⅱ. Structural Compression Redundancy

The 20-liter capacity is achieved through "single-seam cylinder" cutting, with only four pieces of fabric used for the entire package, reducing the stitch length by 30%. The pocket replaces the zipper with an elastic net, saving 12g of the chain. The webbing is made of 1mm Dyneema, weighing 0.7g per meter, which is ten times lighter than the conventional 1-inch webbing.

Ⅲ. Measured Data

The empty weight of the finished product is 46g, and the total weight after filling with water bags is 580g, which is more than 1kg lower than that of traditional bags of the same capacity. During the 30-kilometer hiking test, the shoulder pressure dropped by 18% and the average heart rate decreased by 7 beats per minute, confirming that "calculating every bit" directly translates into energy savings.

Ⅳ. Use of Boundaries

It should be noted that the 50-gram backpack has the frame and belt removed, with a maximum load capacity of approximately 5 kilograms, making it suitable for a quick one-day crossing. If you are carrying a camera or high-altitude equipment, it is still recommended to choose a model weighing 120g or more with a simple backplate to ensure stable carrying.

Conclusion:

From "kilograms" to "hundreds of grams", the weight limit of outdoor bags has been refreshed to 46g, which is equivalent to the mass of an egg. However, lightness is not the only answer: matching the stroke, total weight and one's own load-carrying capacity is the scientific ultimate goal of being "just right light".
