I. Common Bag Fabric Categories

  (A) Natural Fabrics

    1.Genuine Leather

Characteristics: Premium, timeless, durable (develops patina), breathable, luxurious texture. Heavy, expensive, requires maintenance, susceptible to water damage, may bleed dye.

      Common Types:

Full-Grain Leather: Most durable, natural grain, superior strength.

Split Leather: Thinner/softer than full-grain, lower strength, budget-friendly.

Lambskin/Goatskin: Extremely soft, lightweight. Lambskin is delicate; goatskin offers better abrasion resistance.

Pigskin: Durable, breathable. Often used for linings or casual bags.

Exotic Leathers: Crocodile, ostrich, snake – ultra-luxury, high-end applications.

    2.Canvas

Characteristics: Woven cotton/linen. Rugged, abrasion-resistant, lightweight, breathable, easy-care (often machine-washable). Casual, vintage, or workwear aesthetic. Untreated cotton canvas lacks water resistance; many versions feature coatings.

Types: Cotton canvas, cotton-linen blends, waxed canvas (water-repellent, vintage sheen).

    3.Cotton

Characteristics: Comfortable, breathable, skin-friendly, eco-conscious, diverse prints. Less durable than canvas, prone to wrinkling/soiling/abrasion. Common in tote linings, casual bags, or eco-bags.

    4.Linen

Characteristics: Highly breathable, moisture-wicking, naturally antimicrobial, eco-friendly, distinctive texture. Wrinkles easily, lower abrasion resistance, coarse hand feel. Used in sustainable/natural-style bags.

  (B) Synthetic Fabrics

    5.Nylon

Characteristics: Lightweight champion. Strong, abrasion/tear-resistant (especially high-denier grades: 600D, 1000D), elastic, wrinkle-resistant, easy-care, quick-drying, cost-effective. Ideal for travel, outdoor, and commuter backpacks. Lacks premium feel; moderate breathability; melts under heat.

      Types:

        Standard Nylon: Basic utility.

Cordura® Nylon: DuPont's high-tenacity fabric for extreme durability (backpacks, military gear).

Ballistic Nylon: Originally for ballistic vests. Ultra-tough with characteristic crosshatch weave.

Oxford Nylon: Woven texture resembling shirting fabric. Lightweight, durable, water-resistant. Common in laptop/daypacks.

Recycled Nylon: Eco-alternative from post-consumer waste.

    6.Polyster (Polyethylene Terephthalate - PET)

Characteristics: Durable, wrinkle-resistant, dimensionally stable, quick-drying, easy-care, cost-efficient, colorfast. Slightly stiffer than nylon; excellent all-rounder.

      Types:

        Standard Polyester: Versatile.

Polyester Oxford: Economical alternative to nylon oxford.

Taffeta/Taslan: Lightweight packs, linings, shopping bags.

        Recycled PET (rPET): Sustainable option.

7.PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) / Faux Leather

Characteristics: Leather-look aesthetic. Vibrant colors/prints, waterproof, easy-clean, low-cost. Non-breathable, plastic-like feel, low abrasion resistance (scratches/peels), stiffens in cold/deforms in heat, limited eco-profile. Common in fast-fashion/entry-level bags.

8.PU (Polyurethane) Leather / Synthetic Leather

Characteristics: Premium faux leather. Softer/more leather-like than PVC, microporous (improved breathability), better abrasion resistance. Mid-market "leather" alternative. Quality varies significantly.

    9.TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

Characteristics: Eco-friendly polymer. Excellent abrasion/cold/oil resistance, high clarity. Used in transparent bags or as waterproof coatings/laminates over fabrics (e.g., nylon).

    10.Microfiber

Characteristics: Ultra-fine fibers. Silky-soft suede-like texture, moisture-wicking, easy-clean, durable. Common for linings, sport bags, cleaning cloths.

  (C) Hybrid/Treated Fabrics

    11.Coated/Laminated Fabrics

Characteristics: Nylon/polyester base + PVC/PU/TPU layer = waterproof. Compromised breathability; coatings degrade over time. Used in rainwear/outdoor packs.

    12.Ripstop Nylon/Polyester

Characteristics: Reinforced grid weave (high-strength yarns) prevents tear propagation. Essential for outdoor/travel gear.

    13.DWR-Treated Fabrics (Durable Water Repellent)

Characteristics: Chemical finish (e.g., Teflon®) creates hydrophobic surface (beading effect). Resists light rain. Effectiveness diminishes with wear/washing; requires re-treatment. Standard for daily packs.

    14.Composite Fabrics (Laminates)

Characteristics: Bonded layers (e.g., outer nylon + waterproof membrane + inner mesh). Combines waterproofness, breathability, and durability. High-performance outdoor/travel solution.
